39. WHAT IS ON YOUR MOUSE PAD?I don't have one. It's an optical mouse, so I don't need one.
40. WHAT DID YOU WATCH ON TV LAST NIGHT?I don't have cable. However, while my computer was backing up, I did bring out an old VHS and watched stuff I'd recorded from TV on it, including Stargate Atlantis and Doctor Who.
41. FAVORITE SOUND?Someone laughing really hard after I've said something unexpected but funny. It makes me feel really good.

46. WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK?See Misty's response.

Fire hits Palin's church in Alaska

CNN.com: I'm sorry, but even if some people think she's baneful or whatever, there is no excuse for this. I somewhat liked her, and she's surprised me a few times.

This, however, is wrong, and I hope the party responsible, if there is one, is caught and punished.

Bad.

This is a very potent issue, I think. I'm still trying to sort out what I think about it, between what I've been raised with and what I could possibly think.

Very heavy, indeed.

Do you have a ready opinion about this? I'd really like to hear it.

Top 10 Useless Limbs (and Other Vestigial Organs)

LiveScience: "In Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) and in his later works, he referred to several 'vestiges' in human anatomy that were left over from the course of evolution. These vestigial organs, Darwin argued, are evidence of evolution and represent a function that was once necessary for survival, but over time that function became either diminished or nonexistent."

Take a gander. It's fun reading.

In my Borders e-newsletter/weekly effort on their part to get us to buy-more-buy-more-buy-more, they had a banner highlighting the new Twilight movie out. Now, part of the thing with this movie is it's attractive-physically cast that's suppose to draw in the teenage girls, the gay guys to a lesser extent, and the odd tag-along boyfriend, but this banner didn't exactly come up to scratch.

The Most Overhyped Gadgets

Yahoo! Shopping: The biggest let-downs? How have they been for you, should you've gone for them? I have nothing on this list.

Sarah Palin = Maleficent

Earlier, my friend Mike posted a tweet with the following question: "What if Disney did a movie about Sarah Palin?"

At first, I'd though, "Oh, they had, Snow White!" Then, as I was in the shower (naturally, because these things always happen in the shower), I was thinking, "No, not quite, there's someone better." And then she hit me.

Maleficent wasn't quite so known but in her little corner of the realm because that's how she's seen it fit for all this time, but then makes a stunning appearance during a major focus of the realm's attention. She's certainly got the attention of a good deal of homosexual males because "there's just something about her." All of a sudden, everyone starts talking about her for what she says during that major event, and it's her name everyone talks about. Her name is on everyone's lips, and it's her, and then this other one-eyed, old crow.

Her goblin legions do her work while she's concentrating on her work, but as time goes on, Maleficent shows even more character to where the old crow eventually abandons her too after his usefulness has withered (we never do see Diablo after he's done his work, do we?), and close to the end of everything, she turns into a heaving, fearsome dragon in a last-ditch effort to save all she's worked for.

Sarah Palin is Maleficent.

Thoughts?

Why I Love My Phone in 1500 Characters

I've submitted this to a "Your Story" column, just because I felt like this... Seriously, do you guys use your phone much? I want to hear from you! What do you do with your phone? Is it just something you talk on, or is it your all-in-all?

My phone has become almost irrefutably my life, partly because of the portability, usability and because of the myriad of applications I've used to expand the usability. I go on the Internet roughly 5-8 times a day exclusively on my phone, upload content all the time to my blogs, read my news from it, access all four of my e-mail accounts... Seriously, about 99% of my Twitter updates and responses alone come from my phone.
What I like most about my phone, though, is that it's helped me enormously with my quest to become ever greener by nearly eliminating my casual paper usage.I was going to an afternoon meeting with my boss, his assistant and the corporate auditor, and when everyone was bringing a pad and paper to take notes, here I was with Julianus (what I call my phone affectionately). While everyone was writing notes the "old-fashioned way," this self-proclaimed 21st Century boy was typing away, adding to a task I'd set up and making notes for later. It may take longer, but I've taken pride in the fact that I've decreased paper usage by one more person.
I was in another meeting that required a lot of reference material. While everyone else, it seems, was plodding away trying to find a specific text, I'd already scanned the texts to my Documents application earlier and had all the answers and references right there. I could answer questions a lot more efficiently than the others because the information was right there, and without all the weight!
I *love* my phone.

2008 Vice-Presidential Candidate Debate Thoughts

I caught it a little late because my computer was defragmenting, but when I did, I was glad I stayed to watch it. It's the first thing I watched as a person newly without cable!
I liked this one better than the Presidential Candidate debate #1 because they actually interacted. They weren't (completely) hostile, though Sarah Palin sounded scripted. Glad to see she doesn't change very much, eh?

The only thing about Joe Biden is that he kept pronouncing things really... interestingly. On pronunciations, Sarah Palin says "nucular" instead of "nuclear."

I liked that they were rather light-hearted. They both smiled, and took strides with it. There were a few jabs, and even a low blow that had me going "OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH" out loud, but it was good.

During the debate I was drawing Sarah Palin's U.S. flag pin because I liked the design. I'm a horrible artist, but it gave me a chance to test out my new (and by new I mean second-hand) graphics tablet. I like it so far. Hopefully I can develop another side of my creativity.

So, there's my horrible artwork up above! Toodles!

Ditch Your Cable Company With Free, Legal Alternatives

MakeUseOf.com: Just in case you hadn't heard of any of these...

6 alternatives to help you ditch cable television

Floppyhead - Digital Media and Home Theater Computers: I'm seriously considering it, and it comes more each day. I've been thinking about it for a while, actually. I thought about it when I'd gone to North Carolina for a weekend and realised that I'd not turned on the television once.

I realise that every weekend, when Saturdays and Sundays generally happen with the TV off. The only thing I think about now is Stargate, and it's probable I can get that on the Internet somehow as well. The Internet is the way of the future, is it not? I mean, the moment that we decide to give up our consumerism and develop ourselves instead for the sake of human improvement, we'll progress, right?

I think I'm going to do it. Sorry, Comcast. You've just lost a little revenue.

Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream With Breast Milk?

TreeHugger: Another angle on this human milk ice cream debate.

PETA to Ben and Jerry's: Breast Is Best!

The PETA Files: Okay, so... Yeah. I'd be willing to try it, but commercially and logistically, it's a very hard venture. I agree with a number of the commenters that, at least, make the current process for obtaining cow's milk more "humane," if what they say about forced pregnancy is true.

I'm a soy milk drinker myself, so I don't even have a stake in it, and I drink soy milk mostly because I think I've become very, very mildly lactose-intolerant (and the fact that soy milk in WholeFoods and Publix is less expensive than cow's milk).

Kris' 7 Layers of Hell Guacamole

A simple guacmole recipe of my design:
2 whole, ripe avocados
2½ tablespoons balsamic vinaigrette
1 tablespoon Cayenne pepper powder
2 small, whole Scotch Bonnet pepper
2 small, whole jalapeño
1 tablepoon sugar

Bisect the avocados and remove the seeds.

Bisect each half, and cut each segment in half again lengthwise. This will make removing the meat from the skin easier.

Remove the skin from all the pieces.

Cut each of the skinned slices into approximately 1 cubic inch chunks.

Place these chunks, the Cayenne pepper, sugar, and vinaigrette into a food processor for blending/mixing.

De-stem the Scotch Bonnet and jalapeño peppers and add them whole to the contents of the food processor.

Blend until the contents are an even paste. Pour into a serving bowl.

Sprinkle with more Cayenne over it. Serve with an appropriate snack food.

Ahmed The Terrorist

"Silence! I kill you!" Oh my gosh, this is too precious to keep to myself.

Thoughts About Avatar: The Last Airbender - "Sozin's Comet"

I liked the "movie," actually -put it in quotation marks, since that's how I see it, another attempt to capitalise further on a product - though I've never really been a fan of making everyone go into relationships and all. I tend to like things more when people are focused on what they must do, rather than going into all the emotional tidbits and angst (and even, dare I say, Aangst) of relationships. Why have Aang in a relationship at all? It's just... it doesn't seem to mesh.

The reunion with Iroh, from what I understand of the Fire Nation, is very Fire Nation: tidy, without muss and efficient. From what I've seen of his personality, it seems fitting, though the whatzit... The crying, not so fitting. They could've had him forgive with some more, well, dignity.

The Azula arc, I didn't like that so much, because you just see her go craz(y/ier) and that's it. Maybe because this is animated, it just doesn't feel quite so right, though they could've continued on a little bit. Perhaps something more with her mother, or something.

I really liked the "energy-bending" aspect though. I'd never, ever've thought of that.

Ty Lee, for some reason I thought she was originally a part of the Kyoshi Warriors to begin with but betrayed them (which would've explain, in my head anyway, based on what I've seen of the series why Suki would want revenge). I'd read a little on Wikipedia to fill in a couple of questions, though, and I'd realised the "real" reason she'd want revenge, and that Ty Lee is actually an atypical Fire Nation citizen, which had me like "Hmm... Okay."

Probably as I fill in the holes things may change.

And one more thing: Why the Hell do they spell her name Mai. I keep wanting to pronounce it "my" when they pronounce it "may." If they must pronounce it "may" then why not spell her name Mei. Mei's the Chinese way of spelling her particular name anyway.

I don't mean to sound judgmental, but it's a nasty habit anyway. Smoke-free rooms all around, I say. That's been kind of a bone of contention among hoteliers I've known, because there are just some guests who don't feel they can get up and go outside to smoke.

They'll try to rig smoke detectors, smoke next to exhaust fans... Anything rather than get up and walk.

Shan Kanagasingham Appointed General Manager Of The Tides South Beach, The Flagship Property For New Tides Brand

Hospitality Net - Industry News: "Extensive hotel-opening experience clinches hire as 'Diva of Ocean Drive' prepares for December re-launch"

A past news story from my former employer who taught me much of what I know today about hospitality. May they be well.

I do miss them, but times do change.

Jobless lorry driver 'sold' The Ritz hotel to businessman in £250million con

The Daily Mail:
"When businessman Terry Collins was offered the chance to buy the Ritz Hotel for a knockdown price of £250million it was an opportunity that sounded too good to be true.
And it was indeed too good to be true. The hotel, with an estimated market value of around £600million, was not on the market.
Yet two conmen managed to persuade Mr Collins, co-founder of a large and reputable property company, that the hotel's owners, the Barclay brothers, were prepared to sell it at a bargain price."

Now, I'm not one to arbitrarily post something from The Daily Mail, especially since it's not the most worthy piece of news media on this planet... However, I'd originally seen this on one of the hospitality news sources to which I subscribe, and thought, "Oh, well they're a little more reputable, so I suppose it can't be all that bad." I'm not really certain in the figures TDM quote as being what these con artists had spent, as well as on what they'd spent the sum they'd philandered, but it was rather TMZ-like of them, anyway.

Still, I think this businessman should've researched his investment's worth a little more throughly before putting down the pounds, which, if he wins back, will probably be reallocated to legal fees anyway.

Beautiful Handwriting, Lettering and Calligraphy

Monday Inspiration Smashing Magazine

It's all about the handwriting... I know that I was one of those wonderful people who, between second and fourth grades, utterly failed at forming letters in the precise ways the handwriting guides had requested. This has, for the most part, been overcome though my letters are very closely written. When I have sufficient pressure, without smudging or smearing, and when it's perfectly aligned, my handwriting's damn gorgeous.

I think I want to start a little Facebook project about handwriting now...

Though it probably won't be for the timid.

Foreign financers feel they need no license to thrill on Japanese roads

Mainichi Daily News: "At first, the February car crash in Tokyo's exclusive Minato-ku only seemed out of the ordinary because it involved a black Maserati slamming into a taxi, but it has turned out to be very special indeed."

My opinion on this is simply that being so cavalier about other countries' laws is one of the myriad of reasons why the international community can be so mistrustful of foreigners. If you go to the country and it's a simple law like "renew your visa certain months before its expiry" or "go to such a place to renew your driving licence," do so.

Granted, the visa one isn't so simple. Neither are some traffic laws, but if what they say is true, then this dodging is not so nice.

Principal reasons behind not following through seem to be because "I didn't feel like it," and I've never been one to agree with "I didn't feel like it."

Buck up and be responsible.

Vandalism on online epilepsy forum triggers convulsions

Wikinews: "An internet forum, run by the non-profit Epilepsy Foundation, was attacked last week by a group of vandals. The attack, first reported by Wired News, exploited a function of the forums to post JavaScript code. The code injected by the vandals flashed two images repeatedly and tried to lead users off to external websites showing flashing lights and shapes intended to trigger off epileptic fits."

"De la mosquée à l'église, une route solitaire"

Le Monde.fr: Société: "Depuis, il se sent 'illuminé'. Né en France, élevé dans la tradition musulmane, le jeune homme âgé de 26 ans a rejoint les quelques centaines de musulmans qui, plus ou moins ouvertement, se convertissent chaque année au christianisme, embrassant la religion catholique ou protestante."

I often wonder if the reverse would've been so unforgiving. A good read.

Solar Tsunamis Move at Astronomical Speeds

Solar Tsunamis Move at Astronomical Speeds - Yahoo! News: "Images of a tsunami blasting its way through the sun's lower atmosphere have been taken for the first time."

Read it, and then the video is here.

I just love stories of human progress as far as new things accomplished. If we put our minds to it, get our physics in check and whatnot, we've got it licked...

So long as we're responsible.

I'd seen this last year and found it funny... He curses a bit, and it's a little vulgar in some places, but it's funnish.

Real Electric Car Featured in Star Trek Movie

Real Electric Car Featured in Star Trek Movie LiveScience: "The Aptera electric car is so futuristic-looking, it's been seen on the set of the new Star Trek movie."

Not the best-looking car in the world, but it's Star Trek. I'm not really fond of the colours much either, but it kind of reminds me of Togepi, the pokémon.

Rotten Eggs: Secret Ingredient for Suspended Animation?

Rotten Eggs: Secret Ingredient for Suspended Animation? LiveScience: "Science fiction usually sticks hibernating spaceflyers in glowing capsules of goo, but a real-life ingredient for suspended animation may not be too far off, scientists say."

So, yeah... When we are uncovered 400 years later by the Enterprise-D crew, the first thing they're going to smell is not our rotting corpses, but our living corpses smelling like rotting corpses...

Splendid! :-)

Hey, Four-Eyes! You're No Geek!

"The popular notion that people who wear glasses are geeks or nerds doesn't hold up under scrutiny.
A new Australian study looked for an association between introversion (bashfulness or being self-absorbed) and people who are near-sighted, an eye condition that affects one in five people in the United States, according to ophthalmologist Arun Verma of the Daljit Singh Eye Hospital in India."

From LiveScience

The sample size and judgment calls may be questionable, but it's a fun read anyway...

Researcher: Apple to weather recession better than rivals

Even though economic uncertainty is pulling U.S. computer buying plans into a nose dive, Apple's prospects remain brighter than some of its PC rivals, a research firm said Wednesday.

"The U.S. market is heading south, and there's nobody that can escape unscathed," said Paul Carton, director of research at ChangeWave Research. "But it looks like Apple will handle this relatively well."
